CHOLERA OUTBREAK IN KENYA (Preventive measures!)

There has been a cholera outbreak in Kenya and the most recent one being the staff of Nairobi Hospital which left two dead and about  52 staff admitted. Cholera can take your life in a matter of hours  which means it is no joke and we should take all necessary steps to prevent it.

So what is cholera?

Cholera is an infectious disease that causes severe watery diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration and even death if left untreated.  It is caused by a bacterium Vibrio Cholerae found in  food or water that has been contaminated with feces of an infected person . One would then get cholera  by orally consuming these contaminated foods/ water.

Here are symptoms you need to look out for:

  • Watery diarrhea.
  • palpitations.
  • nausea and vomiting.
  • loss of skin elasticity.
  • Dehydration.
  • low blood pressure
  • Muscle cramps.
  • Lethargy.
  • weight loss

At the end of the day prevention is better than cure , right?

Here are ways we can prevent catching cholera

  • Wash hands thoroughly– Ensure you wash hands thoroughly before and after every meal and after visiting the toilet with soap and water .

Finish off  with a sanitizer if one is available

  • Boil water – Boil  water before using for more than 3 minutes to kill any traces of the bacteria

  • Avoid unlicensed food vendors-  Avoid eating on the road or streets , and with the cases of five star hotels leading in cholera outbreaks lately, eating from home or carrying your own food seems to be a better plan.

  • Keep a clean environment– keeping a constantly clean environment at work and at home is very vital in keeping cholera away.

  • Thoroughly cook food– ensure food is thoroughly cooked and any traces of the virus is completely eradicated. It is also advisable to eat the food whilst hot.

  • Wash fruits or only eat peeled fruits- Fruits are notorious in transmitting cholera. I was telling someone the other day about how I wash mine with super brite and Axion and they found it weird. Well, anything to keep the doctors away.

Let us take caution, better safe than sorry. In case you experience these symptoms, visit the nearest hospital as soon as possible and most importantly, keep safe .
